Am 7 März 1945 standen die Alliierten Truppen am Rhein. Der Plan, der 21.Heeres-Gruppe Generalfeldmarschall Montgomery und der 1 US. Armee General Simpson war, den Rhein bei Neuss und Wesel zu überschreiten um dann das Ruhrgebiet einzukesseln. Das Ruhrgebiet war das wichtigste Industriegebiet im Deutschen Reich, daher war es wichtig für die Alliierten Truppen diesen Industriezweig vom Deutschen Reich zu kappen. Die Alliierten flogen jetzt noch verstärkter Lufftangriffe auf das Ruhrgebiet, um so die Industrieproduktion der Deutschen ganz lahm zu legen.
