Nach Griechenland war Kreta von großer strategischer Bedeutung. Von dieser Insel konnten die Allierten den Balkan bedrohen, während die Achsenmächte über eine Ausgangsbasis für Luftangriffe auf die Suez-Schiffahrt und die allierten Stützpunkte in Agypten und Libyen verfügen würde. Auf Kreta befanden sich 30000 britische Soldaten unter dem Kommando von Colonel Matthews. Das 193.Fallschirmbattalion Otto von Würz hatte die Aufgabe, schnellstmöglich von Maleme bis Spakia vorzudringen und die Allierten Truppen dort vernichtend zu schlagen.
Crete was of great strategic importance after Greece. From this island the Allies could threaten the Balkans, while the Axis powers would have a base for air strikes on the Suez shipping and the allied bases in Egypt and Libya.
